This is so true! I had the opportunity to interview Charles Grant a few years ago. He writes horror, among other things. He told me of an incident where a woman came up to him and berated him for the gruesome details of a zombie attack. She went on to describe it in detail and he had to chuckle. All he had written was something like, ‘The zombie tore his arm off” and the woman’s imagination filled in the rest of the details! So, sometimes all you need is the suggestion of something happening for the reader to get an instant image in their heads.

If you read nothing else in the book, there’s a chapter near the end entirely from the creature’s perspective. It’s fantastic in that it really conveys the voice of a creature so far beyond our capacities–I’ve seen it done a few times before (Gaiman’s humorous “I, Cthulhu” comes to mind), but not quite like that.
